That is true but the reality was that the third candidate was just sass right wing (well almost) as Milei she was calling for a South American NATO led by the US. Between her and Milei there was a clear majority. It was not a surprise that the ideological alliance held, not least because the Peronist was an uninspiring campaigner.

I should have added that the battle was likely won when Kirchner was banned, by the Courts, from running. She might have won.

Yep, on completely trumped up charges by an utterly corrupt judge serving the oligarchs. They had unsuccessfully tried to assassinate her only months earlier. Thats how desperate they were to stop her running again.

It was widely telegraphed. No surprise. The Peronist candidate was uninspiring and the third guy in the First Round was another neo-liberal stooge

At the beginning of the last century Argentina was regarded as being in the same economic class as Canada with every prospect of outrunning all the (other) British settler colonies .

It really is an economic object lesson in what not to do.

After the second round of voting, Milei and Massa were running quite close in the polls. So there did seem a chance for Massa, and the scale of the victory for Milei was quite a surprise.

The embedded documentary does an excellent job of covering the failure to develop the Argentinian economy - all about the dominance of the landowning elites.

Curiously enough this guy is so confused about his identity that, on the eve of the election, he announced that he so admired Israel and was so strongly inclined to support its genocide that he was going to convert to Judaism- although it might have to wait until he had served his term. And provoked an uprising among what is surely the most docile- saintly in its patience- population in the world.
