The standard practice of the West is to ignore the crimes of its allies/vassals while exaggerating or even making up the “crimes” of its enemies; creating a threatening Other against which populations can be rallied. An excellent case is that of the “Contra” terrorist force that was used in an attempt to overthrow the Nicaraguan government in. the 1980s. In a reversal of reality, the Sandinista forces that had overthrown the horrendous US-backed Somoza dictatorship were typified as unrepresentative and “authoritarian” (one of the favourite words used by the West to vilify its opponents) and the Contras as “freedom fighters”.
