Spot on analysis- she really is a fin de siecle phenomenon, a symbol of the lineaments of the democracy that people want but has never been further away, not even when the vote was restricted to a tiny minority.

It's the oligarchy's way of saying "we can't afford to give you any power but you might find it easier to identify with these clowns than with the latest descendants of the Electress of Hanover's son George."

And it is Bernie Sanders (not Saunders) too.

Thurgood Marshall? A racist? he might well have been but he is generally held to have been a Civil rights advocate.

Yes, thankyou for this. Juggling too many names at the same time in my head, of course it was Strom Thurmond. Have made the change, again thankyou!

"... to not prosecute Steve Mnuchin’s OneWest bank with respect to widespread foreclosure fraud during the GFC; typified as a “foreclosures machine”. Instead, letting it off with a US$89 million slap on the wrist settlement. "

Less than a slap on the wrist, even. $89M is the combined market value of about 15-18 homes seized by the banks at California housing prices. Basically a gift rather than a slap or fine.
