It may be apocryphal that a US oligarch stated that he could pay one half of the working class to fight the other, but that view so well encapsulates one of the ways in which the small number of oligarchs that rule Western nations remove the focus from themselves and keep their opposition divided.

Millions of people don't simply pack up and leave their family, friends and homeland to go to places vastly different in climate, governance and culture. The reason they emigrate is the destruction of societies in Asia, Africa and Latin America by bombing, war, subversion, sanctions and economic exploitation by Empire. This has been systematically done by Western elites for profit. It has been and continues to be policy. The result has been wealth for them and chaos for the rest. The peasants at the bottom are left to squabble, fight, demonize and kill each other for scraps. More cheap labor coupled with racial animosity that prevents the lower classes from uniting and attacking the real culprits in this mess. Perfect. There are no good guys and bad guys at the bottom, just confused victims.

The ruling class understood that Corbyn's socialist programme, mild as it was, represented the most obvious aternative to the dystopian course of immiseration and racist division on which the UK , headed by Starmer and informed by the fascism of imperialism in rapid decay, is set.
The 2017 alternative of seeking independence from US hegemony, tending towards what has become BRICS and re-distributing the wealth piled up under centuries of empire and decades of neo-liberalism might not have convinced left sectarians but it put the fear of God into the ruling class.
Hence the defenestration of an historically popular radical candidate for political power, and the systematic destruction of the largest radical party in Europe.
