The post-WW2 capitalist class war on the New Deal and the progressive elements within the US state and in society in general saw the gutting of the 1935 pro-union Wagner Act with the Taft-Hartley Act of 1947, and a widespread witch hunt for “communists” lead by Senator Joe McCarthy. For the Jewish population of the US, which had gained greatly in areas such as the US state and Hollywood, this was a disaster; especially with the anti-semitic trope of the “Bolshevik Jew”. Below is an excellent documentary on how the Jewish community became so successful and then saw their dreams dashed by the McCarthy-controlled House on Unamerican Activities Committee (HUAC).
A short documentary on the utterly unscrupulous fabulist that the capitalist class used to help destroy the political coalition that supported the New Deal.
Throughout the 1950s progressives were removed and silenced, while the other unscrupulous fabulist and blackmailer Herbert Hoover mounted a mass spying and political interference campaign (COINTELPRO) that continued through the 1960s. Backed up by a CIA that poured money into creating a non-communist “critical” theory shorn of any real threats to the capitalist class.
The vast majority of the US Jewish community shed much of their progressive leanings, apart for the much safer area of civil rights, and focused on slowly regaining its position while also unconditionally supporting the State of Israel. The community became a full on supporter of US imperialism, which had aligned with Israel with the Eisenhower administration. That administration’s intentional drive, working together with the US capitalist elite and conservative preachers (e.g. Billy Graham), to make the US a Conservative Christian nation that believed in the “free market system” through the Prosperity Bible (as against the Social Gospel that supported the New Deal) also greatly aided US support for Israel. During the 1950s the number of US church members doubled and by 1960 over 60% of Americans were members of a church.
The religious right tended to be Evangelicals that followed the Scofied Bible, a text believed to be heretical by other Christian churches, that deemed that a successful Israel was required for its predictions to become reality. I have covered the writing and impact of the Scofield Bible on US politics and US support for the Zionist regime here. In 1967 (the same years as the Six Days War and after Scofield’s death), Oxford University Press issued an updated version of the Scofield Bible which included specific additions that greatly increased the support for the state of Israel and its rights to take the Palestinian lands; “close to an endorsement of US foreign policy on the state of Israel” (Donald Akenson, The Americanization Of The Apocalypse, p. 435).
After the catastrophe of HUAC the Jewish community also understood the importance of gaining unconditional support for Israel among members of the House and Senate, and was greatly aided in this by the large US Christian Zionist community. In the present day both Houses of Congress and the administration are dominated by Zionists (Jewish and Christian) as well as the upper reaches of the mainstream media, with any criticism of Israel now deemed to be anti-semitic. This is the position pushed by the extremely influential Anti-Defamation League that has redefined its campaign against anti-semitism to now predominantly be a campaign against anti-Zionism and for the conflation of the two. With the gutting of the US campaign finance laws in the past couple of decades, rich Zionists and well-funded Zionist organizations (e.g. AIPAC) are quite capable of destroying any anti-Zionists political career with the full aid of the mainstream media.
Even if that person is Jewish, as with Norman Finkelstein who utterly debunked Harvard University’s Alan Dershowitz’s The Case for Israel, as well as many of the arguments used to support the apartheid and ethnic cleansing policies of the Zionist regime. Dershowitz directly intervened to try to stop Finkelstein gaining tenure at DePaul University, but his complaints were completely rejected by both the university’s political science committee and the academics John Mearsheimer and Lustick who were invited to carry out a further review by the political science department. The department voted 9 to 3, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences 5 to 0, in favour of giving Finkelstein tenure. The Dean of the College, Chuck Suchar, opposed Finkelstein’s tenure, and here is his utterly disgusting memorandum explaining why he opposed tenure; although even he had to note Finkelstein’s excellent academic background and the “transformational” experience of some of his students and his high teaching score. Its is obvious that this was an academic hit job to take out a professor that criticized the Zionist regime and threatened the legitimacy of one of its greatest US academic supporters. After tenure was denied and Finkelstein’s classes gratuitously cancelled the students mounted a sit in against the decision, but the university was unchanging and a confidential settlement was reached with Finkelstein. That was in 2007, things are much worse now in academia and in politics; shown by the overwhelming attacks on students protesting for Palestinian rights.
But the very heights of US elite support for the Zionist regime that have now been reached may also be its zenith that presages a fall as Christian Zionism is unable to find enough new recruits to offset the deaths of its followers, and the younger generations of US Jews are turning against the Zionist regime, as I have documented here. US Christian Zionist power may only have ten years left. Its followers fell from 30% to 24% of the US population from 2007 to 2021, and the hold of religion upon US citizen’s beliefs fell 4% in the single year of 2021. By 2025 the Christian Zionists may be down to 18% of the population, with the congregation heavily skewed toward older generations. With 49% of Democrats already supporting Palestine in 2023, how many will it be in 2035? In the 2024 election, the issue of the US unconditional support for the Israeli genocide may very well play a pivotal role in many previously Democratic voters refusing to vote for that party.
At the same time, US hegemony in the Middle East and Central Asia is significantly declining after the disastrous invasions of Iraq (which very substantially increased Iranian influence in what had been a US ally and Iranian enemy) and Afghanistan (now increasingly a friend of China, Russia and Iran), and the failed attempt at regime change in Syria (now tightly aligned with Iran and Russia). In addition, the peace deal between Saudi Arabia and Iran shepherded by China and Russia has greatly enhanced the latter two nations reputation in the region, while reducing the influence of the US. Trump’s throwing away of the Iran-US nuclear deal, the imposition of even more extreme sanctions upon it, and his murder of Soleimani have only served to strengthen Iran. The extreme sanctioning of Russia, and the theft of its US$ and Euro foreign exchange reserves, also freed it to greatly deepen its relationship with Iran; including on military matters. Extensive Chinese investments are also aiding Iran’s recovery from Obama’s and Trump’s attempts to subjugate it.
This is all horrible news for the Zionist regime as it sees the position of its main regional rival greatly improve, while the US support that it is dependent upon for its survival both weakens internally and globally. The Zionists may have also been drinking the Western elite koolaid about the inevitable collapse of Russia in the face of Western sanctions; hopes now completely dashed. So what to do, make peace with their neighbours and provide the Palestinians with some level of actual freedom? Well of course not, instead the Zionist regime decided to escalate from the slow-motion genocide of the past decades; one designed to keep foreign attention to a minimum with the complicity of the Western elites and media. Instead we get the daily full-on genocide in Gaza while the regime recklessly attacks Lebanon and Syria. With the overwhelming revulsion of the Other 7 Billion, and the rulings at now both the ICC and ICJ, together with the increasingly strident denunciations of the Zionist regime by China and Brazil, the interests of the US capitalist elite as a whole may be separating significantly from those of the Zionist regime.
But the deep integration of the Zionist diaspora into the offices of state power and the media, together with the strength of the Christian Zionists, now provides a blockage to a more beneficial policy stance by the US. No more can the likes of a Reagan or a Bush Sr. directly threaten the Zionist regime to make them back down, instead we witness an utterly subservient administration and Congress falling over themselves to provide the weaponry, and even some of the boots on the ground, for the genocide. While in parallel attempts are made to gaslight the US and Western publics about the truly horrific reality of the genocide, for instance only recently denying their “lying eyes” that Zionist soldiers baited starving Palestinians into a trap with food aid only to massacre them and drive over the broken bodies with tanks. The truth from Al Jazeera (the title of the news report is “‘Cold-blooded massacre Israeli forces kill over 104 aid seekers in Gaza”):
Versus Western gaslighting, with this piece from CNN that calls the intentional massacre of civilians a “chaotic incident” being a good example of such gaslighting; Goebbels would be proud. Note that the CNN article is not age-restricted by YouTube like the Al Jazeera one above is:
All the while Zionist opinion leaders and the Anti-Defamation League gaslight the US public that the media is somehow not fully in bed with Zionism and that there has been an outbreak of “anti-semitic” incidents (actually anti-Zionist incidents); while defaming and attacking those that disagree with them.
So the US capitalist elite finds itself on a train it cannot get off, even though it may mean losing the US election to a Donald Trump who while being a member of the elite is at odds with the interests of its majority internationalist segment. At the same time, US and Western soft and hard power is in serious decline due to their open support for a genocide in progress (the US is now the only member of the UN Security Council blocking a call for an immediate ceasefire) and their ongoing humiliation by Russia in Ukraine and the Yemenis in the Red Sea (after their humiliation by the Afghans). The supposed Zionist client state has gained a significant amount of control over its master through its US diaspora.
A Trump administration may be able to disconnect itself from the Ukrainian failure (with significant concessions given to Russia and a concomitant further loss of global prestige), but it will find itself unable to do so with respect to a Zionist regime hell-bent on a religious-supremacist war against the Palestinians and its neighbours Lebanon (Hezbollah) and Syria; and indirectly upon Iran. With the Other 7 billion, together with an increasing amount of the Western populations, becoming vehemently opposed to the Zionist regime and its supporters this is a toxic conundrum for the US capitalist elite.
If anyone doubts the Zionist domination of the current administration, these are the occupants of the senior positions in the current US administration.
Joe Biden President: All three children who lived to adulthood married Jews (University of Delaware).
So Jews couldn’t just move to the US where they would be completely safe, rather than American Jews going to Occupied Palestine and stealing Palestinian’s houses and land? Doesn’t that make them more unsafe? Probably not a position taken by his Jewish Megadonors (as the Israeli newspaper Haaretz calls them).
Kamala Harris Vice President: Married to a Jew, also of Hindu background and now identifies as a Baptist; a church that tends to be Zionist supportive (Howard & University of California).
Jeff Zients Chief of Staff, Jewish (Duke)
Anthony Blinken Secretary of State: Jewish, father-in-law was advisor to known Mossad-asset Robert Maxwell (Harvard & Columbia)
Janet Yellen Secretary of the Treasury: Jewish (Yale)
Lloyd Austin Secretary of Defense: Catholic (West Point & Webster)
Merrick Garland Attorney General: Jewish (Harvard)
Alejandro Mayorkas Secretary of Homeland Security: Jewish, and son of a Cuban factory owner who fled the Cuban revolution (Berkeley & Loyola)
Avril Haines Director of National Intelligence: Jewish (Chicago & Georgetown)
Jake Sullivan National Security Advisor: Catholic (Yale & Oxford)
William J. Burns Director of the CIA: Methodist (LaSalle & Oxford)
Jared Bernstein Chair of the Council of Economic Advisors: Jewish (Manhattan School of Music)
It’s interesting that Blinken has lead the charge with respect to the Zionist genocide, considering his far too obvious linkages to Mossad and general Zionist interests. Notably on a recent trip to Israel he stated that he came to Occupied Palestine not only as the US Secretary of State but “also as a Jew”; a statement that should have had him immediately fired as Secretary of State for a secular and still predominantly Christian nation.
The ex-diplomat William J. Burns who is now Head of the CIA has very much been critical of Israel, within the limits allowed by the US establishment. He has been sidelined during the genocide.
Biden’s opponent for president in the 2024 elections is Donal Trump. His daughter converted to Judaism after marrying a Jew who is a close family friend of Benjamin Netanyahu! A Trump presidency will most probably bring quite a few Evangelical Christian Zionists into power, as well as possibly the Hindutva Tulsi Gabbard (Hawaii Pacific & Alabama Military Academy). In Congress the support for the Zionist regime, and equating anti-Zionism with anti-semitism (an utterly spurious linkage), has been overwhelming and bipartisan.
The US capitalist elite is locked into a policy of unconditional support for the Zionist regime which will only help accelerate its decline and greatly aid the rise of China, Russia and Iran within an independent EurAsian core, shorn of its declining Western European archipelago, and an increasingly sovereign Africa. Never again will the West be able to cry “human rights” or “humanitarian intervention” or “right to protect” as cover for its aggressions. The minds of the scholars and opinion formers within the 7 billion are also becoming increasingly decolonized as the legitimacy of the West and Western “civilization” is trashed on a daily basis.
The US capitalist elite is becoming increasingly dysfunctional as its monopolistic and extractive tendencies forestall any real rebuilding of US domestic strength, its globalist and domestic oriented members are increasingly at odds, and the Jewish diaspora in the US forestalls a rational foreign policy with respect to the Zionist regime. On a lesser scale, the anti-Russian Eastern European US diaspora in the US may also act to block rational actions toward Russia (reinforcing the tendencies of the globalist members of the capitalist elite); that’s a topic for another post.
It is very easy to underestimate the long term effects of the McCarthy agitation and the subsequent decades of anti-communism. Anti-commuism, like a virus, infected every corner of Imperialist society and nowhere more than at its centres.
As an intellectual movement it took a long time to mature. One might argue that only now, thirty years after the demise of the USSR, is the movement peaking.
It took a long time to eradicate all the `communist`influence from the academic world, for example, which is crucial to the development of social ideology. In History, for example, the influence of communists and socialists was almost hegemonic though beginning to wane by the end of the C20th.
What we see today is the replacement of marxism as a critique of society with a series of alternatives, distinguished by the fact that none of them is based on class analysis and that all involve the enigration of revolutionary theory.
In terms of ideas in the imperial metropoles things are just going to get worse- the last marxists are dying out and what is replacing them, apart from the incomprehensible gobbledegook of renegade theorists is a crude liberalism that has the sole virtue of bringing Dickens`works back into vogue.
This might matter were it not that, having dumbed down its brain, the Empire is stumbling towards irrelevance intellectually as well as otherwise
Anti-communism.... a euphenism for anti-labor....
Goal.... destroy the trade unions.... gut worker benefits/wages....
With the accession of the PRC to the WTO, the Corporate elites found a new tool to gut worker incomes further...
In consequence, enrollments in STEM curricula atrophied, to the point that US graduate schools depend almost exclusively on foreign students of exceptional ability to operate.
Into this breach stepped the FBI, hell bent upon prosecuting and hobbling foreign scholars in the US...
In the old days they could do this with impunity, now not so.... Why?? because the PRC and Iran and Russia now need those folks and compensate them hansomely...
An outlier in this trend is Pakistan... the newly appointed Sharif government announced to the world that it seeks to "improve relations with the USA" how it' major benefactor China, and it's major energy supplier(s) Iran/Russia will treat this remains to be seen...
